The Closer You Look
Reticent to talk to God directly, she photographs the dragonfly at the pond.
—About the Work
Made in Layers
Cynthia Winter works primarily on paper: pen and ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel, though her more recent pieces have moved to canvas in acrylic. The media are rarely used alone. Most pieces layer ink over watercolor, or watercolor over colored pencil, building depth through accumulated marks. A raven's feather structure requires the same patience to draw as it did to photograph.
Her subjects come from the natural world and from a long practice of photographing it up close, but she also works in more abstract territory: mandalas, circular compositions that feel at once microscopic and cosmic, where the same patience applies to pure form and color.
Her home in Troy is hung with work at every stage. Finished pieces, pieces in progress, experiments that went somewhere unexpected. For her, making art isn't a separate practice. It's how she inhabits the world.
“A scream of joy
ricocheted inside me.”

Six mushrooms cluster together on a fallen log, caps in shades of magenta, plum, and rose, each dusted with small white spots. They're shown from multiple angles at once: some caps tip forward to reveal their gilled undersides in fine striped detail, others are seen from above, domed and solid. Pale curved stems lean into one another at the base, rooted in moss and fern that anchor the piece in a specific, grounded place. Warm and slightly fantastical, it brings the quiet strangeness of a forest floor indoors.

This raven is shown in profile, beak closed, a steady rust-colored ring around a watchful eye. Pen and ink builds the feather structure in dense, deliberate strokes, but pale blue and silvery-gray have been worked into the black, so what reads as solid darkness gives way, on a closer look, to real color and texture. An inward, contemplative presence: a bird caught not in motion, but in stillness.
